About Me

Anna received a Bachelor of Music with Distinction at the Canberra (now ANU) School of Music, and received further studies in violin in the Advanced Solo Studies course at the Guildhall School of Music under David Takeno.  She remained in London for ten years and worked professionally in the early music field, becoming the leader of the Gabrieli Consort and Players, Hanover Band and Avison.  She toured widely in Europe, the USA, Japan and Australia, and made recordings for Deutsche Grammophon Archiv, Harmonia Mundi, CPO, Philips, Channel Classics, and other recording companies.

Returning to Australia, she was the founding concertmaster of Pinchgut Orchestra, and led the ABC recording orchestras in Sydney for ten years.  She has taught violin and chamber music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Sydney University.  Anna is currently the convenor of Women in Music and the Intercultural Ensemble at the ANU School of Music.  Her expansion into intercultural music and composition has lead to a PhD in ethnomusicology at the ANU School of Music, which will be completed in 2023.  Anna's PhD contains a strong psychological component, as she has included in her methodology  her years of experience in working with musicians at a psychological/experiential level.

Anna has given talks on "Inner Critic work" at AUSTA conferences in Canberra in Perth.  Her work with the spiritual-emotional elements of music-making has been enhanced with her ethnomusicological studies in Persian music.  She has presented papers in Mithraism and Music at conferences hosted by the Templeton Foundation and the University of Western Sydney.

As a composer she thrives in projects which nurture inclusiveness.  She was awarded a composer's residency in 2018 for the Prelude program in association with the National Trust of Australia.   With her husband Malek Mohammadi Nejad she co-composes music for their intercultural "Ensemble of the Eternal Land."  She has lived in Iran and Armenia and plays the Iranian kamancheh (spike fiddle) as well as the violin.

She divides her time between performance coaching and being an international performer and composer.
